Peradam
Marcos Lutyens
An LPP Sunset Hiking Club Collaboration
Hike to the Berlin Forest followed by an induction - the gateway to the invisible must be visible
Lauren Powell Projects is delighted to announce the relaunch of the LPP Sunset Hiking Club with Peradam, a unique vertical climb and induction led by Marcos Lutyens. This event will take place on Saturday, June 8th, beginning at 5:55PM.
Participants are asked to meet at the bear statue at the entrance of Griffith Park where Fern Dell Drive and Los Feliz Boulevard intersect - please park and gather here by 5:55pm. Words will be offered to commence the journey followed by an ascent to the Berlin Forest at the mountain’s summit. Along the way participants will be asked to assist in carrying the objects for the performance, culminating in the creation of a collaborative artwork with Lutyens on the other side as the sun sets at 8:03pm. Upon completion, we will retrace our steps and descend the mountain together as a changed community. Please bring a blanket or yoga mat for maximum comfort during the induction.
For those who are not able to join in the trek up the mountain, please join us in the Berlin Forest via Observatory Parking Lot where parking is readily available at 7PM.
We learn from surrealist writer René Daumal’s Mount Analog that 'The Gateway to the Invisible must be Visible', and for this performance, we will seek that gateway together. A Peradam is an object that is revealed only to those who seek it, and we encourage all participants to arrive with both curious and open minds. From the notes of René Daumal:
“Alpinism is the art of climbing mountains by confronting the greatest dangers with the greatest prudence. Art is used here to mean the accomplishment of knowledge in action.
You cannot always stay on the summits. You have to come down again...
So what's the point? Only this: what is above knows what is below, what is below does not know what is above. While climbing, take note of all the difficulties along your path. During the descent, you will no longer see them, but you will know that they are there if you have observed carefully.
There is an art to finding your way in the lower regions by the memory of what you have seen when you were higher up. When you can no longer see, you can at least still know. . .”
We look forward to embarking on this enlightening journey together.
Marcos Lutyens employs his artistic practice to engage with the mental and emotional well-being of his audience, skillfully guiding participants through hypnotic exercises that reach the profound depths of their psyche. His creative expressions manifest in various forms such as installations, sculptures, drawings, short films, writings, and performances.
In his quest to explore consciousness, Lutyens has collaborated with renowned neuroscientists V. Ramachandran and Richard Cytowic, alongside studying under shamans from diverse cultures. Drawing insights from these collaborations and research endeavors, he has applied his understanding to interact with the unconscious states of visitors in museums, galleries, and biennales across the globe.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY, extended an invitation to Lutyens to serve as the keynote artist for the opening performance at the 2019 Culture Summit. His works have been showcased in numerous museums and prominent art exhibitions worldwide, including the Royal Academy of Arts, Centre Pompidou, National Art Museum of China, Documenta, and the Biennials of Venice, Istanbul, Liverpool, and São Paulo.
Currently, Lutyens is involved in the "Living Memories" project with the World Health Organization. This global initiative was launched at the United Nations Headquarters, Central Park, and the Lincoln Center in New York. In May, it is being activated in Rio de Janeiro at the Rio City Hall and the Christ the Redeemer Statue, as well as in Geneva, Switzerland. Additionally, this month he is exhibiting his work and presented various hypnotic performances at the Kunstverein Hannover, Germany. He is also showcasing a sound piece at MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome, Italy. Furthermore, he made a performance at the Arsenale in Venice, Italy, coinciding with the opening of the 60th Venice Biennale. Lutyens is preparing work for the Getty’s PST exhibition at The Oceanside Museum of Art, curated by Cassandra Coblentz, and also a performance project for the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France.
