RITUALS
Senon Williams
Book Launch, Painting Procession and Poetry Readings with MOCA - 3-6PM
Beginning at MOCA Grand Avenue (250 South Grand Avenue) to The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (152 N Central Avenue)
Lauren Powell Projects and MOCA Store are thrilled to invite all to an exciting afternoon celebrating Los Angeles–based artist Senon Williams’ new artist publication, Rituals ( After Purchase Keep or Gift Pub.Co and Lauren Powell Projects, 2024). The book release event at MOCA, like the inaugural procession, will take place at sunset with six paintings, this time starting at MOCA Grand then traveling on foot through downtown L.A. ending at the Geffen Contemporary Museum Pavilion. At the Pavilion there will be a book sale and signing along with public viewing accompanied by relevant poetry readings by Mandy Kahn, Ari Salka, and Senon Williams. A unique experience for both the art and humans alike. Poetry books by Mandy Kahn and Ari Salka will also be available for purchase.
Senon Williams's Rituals artist publication captures painting processions from Lauren Powell Projects gallery to Griffith Park during spring and fall, 2023. Limited to 100 copies, each unique unbound book includes six fine art prints.
These six new sunset paintings will be carried on the artist crafted pole-sling which converts into a free-standing A-frame for viewing the work. Carrying the paintings is shared by the procession of walkers profoundly connecting us as a community. The work delves into the depths of existence, in play with the power dynamics within society against the awe inspiring beauty of nature. The individual figures within each composition embody both leadership and oppression, symbolizing the dynamics of power and control within our civilization.
Senon Williams is a lifelong visual artist and musician from Los Angeles exploring the human struggle through paintings, wood sculptures, and assemblages. His work, bridging ancient and contemporary themes, reflects on identity, history, and community. Senon integrates language, sound, and texture, creating a meditation on existence. Notable solo exhibits include Five Car Garage (2024), Lauren Powell Projects (2023), PRJCTLA (2022) with group shows at Biola University Museum (2023) and The Lodge Gallery (2022). His works are housed in public collections, including LACMA and the Hammer Museum.
Senon’s previous publications are "Hunted & Gathered", 2017 (Hamilton Press), "Words Don’t Mean Much", 2022 (Hat & Beard Press) and has self published many zines and zine collaborations with visual artists, poets and writers. (After Purchase Keep or Gift Pub. Co.)
The paintings are available for private viewing before and after the event. The event is free and open to all, and RSVP is encouraged through MOCA’s website HERE. You can preorder the book HERE. Please reach out to lauren@laurenpowellprojects.com for inquiries and more information.
